Step away from the gas guzzler

64449H(NC) —When it comes to buying a new vehicle, there is a big difference between what you need and what you want.  Do you really need an oversized pick-up truck for driving in the city or a seven-person passenger van for taking the dogs to the lake?  Or would a small, fuel-efficient two-door vehicle get you where you want to go?

You can save hundreds of dollars every year in fuel costs by choosing to buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle, maintaining it as specified in the owner’s manual and adopting fuel-efficient driving habits.   One quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada come from transportation, half of which are generated by light-duty vehicles.

For example, for every litre of gasoline used, a vehicle produces about 2.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2).  As a result of the fuel combustion process, the average car produces about three times its own weight in CO2 every year.

Choose a vehicle that fits your everyday needs in terms of size and power. Put some serious thought into your space and cargo needs.  Passenger cars with smaller engines tend to deliver better fuel economy than those with larger engines. Keep in mind horsepower levels have also doubled over the past two decades and the power available in subcompact cars today exceeds that of many midsize sedans of 20 to 30 years ago.

Natural Resources Canada rates the fuel efficiency of all new vehicles in Canada every year.  You can check out their scorecard at and have fun shopping.
